The band members who made the transition from being a teenager to rock star are still figuring out who Jack White is, but their music has a certain melancholy about it.
Jack’s brother Scott, a composer, performed the first album, The Way It Is, in his native Texas in 1992.
It was a departure for White, who had grown up in California.
“Jack had to make that transition,” Scott says.
“But it was a little more difficult because I was so young, I was never really comfortable with that.”

After a couple of years, he was ready to take a break from his music career to focus on his music.
“I started to write music when I was 17 and I was like, ‘I’m not going to write anymore,'” Scott says now.
“It was a pretty radical decision.
I’ve always been a really good writer, so that was pretty hard for me.”
The first album of The Way it Is was released in 1996, and White released another album, 1999’s The Way That We Were.
His last two albums were both in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200.
“People always ask me if I’m going to be doing any more albums,” White says.
But he says he’s been writing more and more, and recently released a new record.
It’s called The Way I Am Now.
Scott says his new album is more about being himself.
“What I’ve been working on, I’m not even sure if it’s music or just being myself, but I’m finding my voice,” Scott said in a phone interview from his home in Texas.
“The way I’m feeling about my life is different now, because of the success that I’ve had and because of what I’ve done with The White Stripes.”
The band was founded in 1991, when Scott was in high school, but he and his brother Michael White, now 30, decided to move into the recording studio for their first album.
Scott had a great time doing it, but then he got sick.
“He was like this young, bubbly kid, so we went in the studio together and he just didn’t make it,” Scott recalls.
“When I came back, he just was so exhausted, he couldn’t take the pressure.”
Scott says the band had to improvise, because he didn’t have the instruments to make the music he wanted.
“We didn’t know what we wanted to do with this album,” Scott explains.
“And so we started to improvising, but it didn’t feel right.

The Strokes were still very much a band, and Scott and Michael worked on the music for the first time.
Scott wrote his own songs and performed them in front of the band, but didn’t want to be a solo artist.
“One of the things I really didn’t like about it was that I was trying to do it my own way, and it was really hard,” Scott tells Rolling Stone.
So we started working on some other things.” “
Even with the album we were making, we were still writing songs together and it just wasn’t working for us.
So we started working on some other things.”
White and his bandmates were starting to get the hang of writing, and the songs got better.
“Then the next record came out and we really didn, like, had a really great time writing it,” White recalls.
The group recorded two more albums, 1999 and 2001, and released The Way We Were, the last in 2004.
The album was praised for its lyrical content and was one of the best-selling albums of all time, and in 2005 White died.
White is survived by his wife, Laura, and daughter, Charlotte, with whom he has a son, Jacob.
